TinEye down for maintenance

Hi TinEyers,

TinEye will be taken offline for a few days for some server maintenance and a little catnap (he gets cranky without his yearly nap)!

We plan to have everything up and running again by Tuesday June 22nd or earlier if possible.

Thanks for your patience, folks!

Damn! I use this service a lot. Anyway, I guess it must be done.

Bob June 18, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Hey Bob, sorry about that but as know TinEye is rarely ever down or taken down for maintenance. We don’t do it lightly. Hope you can hold out for a bit with it. Thanks for using TinEye.

Leila Boujnane June 18, 2010 at 3:39 pm

I love tineye. Thanks for it. :)

Justin June 18, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Hello, good luck with maintenance ! Your site is very, very useful to me ! Thanks for this awesome tool.

Copyright June 18, 2010 at 4:01 pm

I use this service to verify fake identities on a social network. It’s amazing how convincing people can sound – about who they are, where they are from, their age… Tineye verifies that they are not who they say they are – rather they pull images from other places to make their “profile”.

foozang June 18, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Damn, hope it’s back quickly. Such a valuable service.

KzT June 18, 2010 at 4:07 pm

How long? I just want to use it.

Tom June 18, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Damn. I really use this site/plugin a lot…Do you think that you could have a backup server around to handle the main traffic while you do fixes upon the main engine? just a thought…

Jim Lofa June 18, 2010 at 4:42 pm

@Tom We are not sure at this stage. We will bring TinEye back as soon as possible. Currently we estimate that we will be doing that on Tuesday June 22. But it could be earlier.

Leila Boujnane June 18, 2010 at 4:42 pm

heh, it was online an hour ago

but just when I need to use it…

I am always shocked when services go down for server maintenance, after working for several companies, we always fretted about a few seconds of downtime between switching from master to slave DB servers and such. How can you not have a way to do maintenance without taking down your entire service? Just seems like bad planning to me.

Joe Smith June 18, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Is a good idea to accomplish it on weekend? :S

Counting down… tic, tac, tic, tac

God bless our patience :P

Javier June 18, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Keep up the good work, you really deserve some rest.

bloore June 18, 2010 at 6:38 pm

@Joe Smith: I am not going to get into the details of what we are doing, but suffice it to say that we are not switching from master to slave! Keep busy without TinEye and we will see you later. Have a good weekend. TinEye will be.

Leila Boujnane June 18, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Comparable to foozang I also use TinEye, to search the web for my photos and look, who copies my work. It’s sad and makes me angry if I see people using my works, as I’m not earning my living with it – but they eventually do!
So now I’d like to thank you, the service team around TinEye, that you offer such a service! Also for artists like me. And it’s absolutely fine, if the service is down, so you can adjust whatever you’re doing there.
I’m wondering how ignorant some people are, complaining and “wanting” something, which eventually is offered them for free.

Thank you once more and I hope you can enjoy your weekend though! (:

David June 18, 2010 at 7:25 pm

David: thanks for your kind comments. Happy to have you as a TinEye fan! Have a great weekend.

I can’t beleive people are whining over a few days of down time on a service that’s FREE to use.!

Maybe if Tineye charged $10.00 a month to the bazillions who used it, then they could have redundant systems running simultaneously.

But they don’t charge anything. So, I’d say stop whining and be patient while they fix whatever needs to be fixed.

Marty June 19, 2010 at 12:46 am

God save the maintenance ! I love Tineye. Thanks for perfect idea!

Thanks immensely for this service.

Thanks for the great service, i really need TinEye i love it!

JooDontNow June 19, 2010 at 9:38 am

Like everyone else, I’m a bit disappointed when I can’t use TinEye; It’s a great service I’ve come to depend on for a few things.

But more than anything, I want to thank the developers for making this amazing technology available for us all to use – for free!

Dan June 19, 2010 at 9:45 am

Thank you soooo much for creating TinEye! I had been looking for a tool like this, then I one day checked out RockYourFirefox, when I saw this addon! Anyways, it’s OK that it is down for a couple of days, I don’t remember it ever has been. Thanks again!

Laura June 19, 2010 at 11:26 am

TinEye is an awesome service. Downtime is disappointing, but I understand that it is necessary, and given that this service is provided for free, it’s absurd to expect TinEye to have backup servers when it’s probably somewhat of a struggle simply to keep the service expanding.

Luke June 19, 2010 at 11:31 am

I love you, folks! Best webservice of all.

fred June 19, 2010 at 12:18 pm

“How DARE you inconvenience me by taking down this service that I use continually and thus contribute to the costs of running, but that you provide for free!”

See how silly that sounds?

I love you folks at TinEye, thanks so much for your service! See you in a few days!

Ronin June 19, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Thanks for the great service

fred June 19, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I imagine it all gets a bit gunked up with scattered pixels clogging the works. I’ve got a wire-brush, some scrapers, and a shovel, if you need any help.

Seriously, though, thanks for TinEye, it’s a must-have resource, a brilliant idea, and it’s only now that I realise how much I’ve taken its presence for granted in the past.
May it go from strength to strength.

kev b June 19, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I heart tineye.

TRP June 19, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Good luck with maintenance! Tineye has helped me track down a good 2500 stolen photos, artwork, and the like (including my own) since its inception and with a list of 500 to check this weekend, it was soon to make 3000.

Downtime is unfortunate, but understandable. I’ll be patient and save my huge art theft search for next weekend ;) Thanks for everything you guys do!

A. June 19, 2010 at 1:53 pm

I use it quite often, so I miss it now… :-(
Good luck with the work.

Jerommel June 19, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Aww, just when I needed to use it. Oh well, still love you guys! I remember when TinEye was still in beta, and it couldn’t really find anything yet… but look how much you’ve grown! Enjoy your weekend off, you deserve it!

Kevin M. June 19, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Hope TinEye gets through the maintenance without any problems, it’s such a great service! I use it to track down the original creators/uploaders of Lego builds stolen by noobs, so that we can present Flickr mods with proof they stole the images. Your service has been invaluable during the fight against image theft, so thank you very much!

Mark June 19, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Tineye always helps my mate and I find out about kids using fake images from extensive googling on Kongregate amongst other websites. I appreciate the gallery, and e’erything! <3 Tineye

Sill Abendroth June 19, 2010 at 3:36 pm

@Joe Smith Jun 18 10 at 6:10 pm: Well Joe, perhaps you can take all that energy spent criticizing and come up with a fabulous idea for TinEye to use on those horrible down time issues. If not, be quiet.

Janette June 19, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Cool cat! =)

Catherine June 19, 2010 at 3:56 pm

@Joe Smith: Oh yeah Joe, if this bothers you so much why don’t you opt for the pay version.

Janette June 19, 2010 at 3:57 pm

maintenance ? And that too for several days
Crazy… This means you guys are not working hard enough and the site has a stupid server

tom June 19, 2010 at 4:28 pm

@tom Yes, you are correct: we are sleeping right now. Actually we never got out of bed this Saturday and we will likely just continuing sleeping right through the weekends. :) Hell no. We are working mate. Have a great weekend.

Leila Boujnane June 19, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I think you people are twisting my words a bit.

@Janette: As a programmer for high availability services, I can develop solutions so that there’s little to no downtime beyond my simple DB fallover scenario that I described in my previous post, however there’s not enough information being provided as to reason for downtime, so my ability to suggest anything tangible is highly limited, but it’s great that you’re jumping to conclusions without understanding either side.

Also recognizing room for improvement isn’t at all equal to whining about a free service being down. When people are surrounded by unanimous praise and yes-men then innovation stagnates. I appreciate Tineye, however that should not prevent me pointing out that this is not a normal thing for the internet for services to go down for days at a time.

Joe Smith June 19, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Oh, i only came across this site like 10 mins ago and its down, Just my luck lol. Will it help me i dentify some1 by their picture cus i think my friends have set a fake account using a randomers picture and i just want to check whether they are ? Thanks

Tori June 19, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Joe has a point there but not obvious from the beginning… ;)

I would say great job guys and gals till now and hope you become better and better each day! Yes, i agree it’s a bit too long for a service, no matter free or not, to be down for so many days but eventually what HAS to be done WILL be done and we ALL will be happy and running!! Keep up the good work up there!! ;)

MacT June 19, 2010 at 6:58 pm

sunny June 19, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Hey, plz, we need TinEye, there is not any other website like this T_T

GEEO June 20, 2010 at 12:38 am

I have never seen such a whiny bunch of cry babies about a website being down. The world does not revolve around you no matter what you think. Oh dear a website is down because it’s fixing something, apparently you all that are complaining are perfect in your life that everything you do is done right the first time.

Maybe they are fixing the service so the search is even better than before? You want to complain even though these people are trying to provide you a service you apparently use otherwise you wouldn’t be complaining.
So sit down and be quiet, get some patience, and be adults, well as close as you can to being one.

travis June 20, 2010 at 1:27 am

D’OH! >_<

That's ok, though. :)

TugaPipe June 20, 2010 at 11:07 am

@Joe Smith: I realise there are people who enjoy complaining, pointing out the faults of others, incorporate sarcasm into their passive-aggressive attempts to make others look stupid, you know things like that. In this world, the odds are the same as the sun rising every day in the east. You could say I jumped to conclusions without understanding either side, I’ll even say I expected you to say something in that area. Although, I cannot for the life of me figure out why, given you know absolutely nothing about my capabilities or me. Here’s another conclusion I’ll jump to for you: idée operates the following five companies on the Internet (see below) and I’ll guess, with the exception of TinEye, there is a charge to use them. Perhaps, given it is the freebie of the bunch, TinEye is not the highest priority at idée these days. Being a programmer for high availability services, you assuredly already thought of that. I suppose what irked me about your comment enough to make one of my own was that you could have easily contacted idée and offered the services you so graciously listed for me, not posting anything. No harm, no foul, or did you feel it was your duty to point out the slackness and unprofessionalism of an act of downtime on the Internet.

Julie S June 20, 2010 at 12:39 pm

I actually kind of agree with what Joe Smith said about sites going down. Sure, I’ve seen some sites go down for several hours at a time, but I’ve never seen a site go down for more than a day. Here is a suggestion. Perhaps you could do weekly maintenance on the server which would last an hour or two, rather than doing maintenance once a year (or however often you do it). And please don’t say I’m whining, I’m just surprised that this site has been down for so long. Sites that I have seen which have been down for this long are usually due to suspended accounts or something like that. Anyway, I just can’t wait for this site to come back up.

First of all, this product is amazingly brilliant. You must have put in quite a bit of work to get it where it is, and hats off for the innovation there.

Also :) I guess it’s just impossible to please everyone. Even if you’re providing something for ‘free’.

I hope it’s nothing catastrophic that has you with your downtime, and that servives are back up soon.

But hey, I’d be lying if I said I weren’t curious as to what it might be. Oh well, I’ll live. :P

Can’t wait for your great service to get back up and running.

Mr Alchemy June 20, 2010 at 7:50 pm

I have to agree with Joe. Having such a service down for several days for “maintainence” is unusual. I assume they are doing a big upgrade.

It is still damaging to their reputation to have the free service down for so long, it gives a bad impression about idee’s ability to deliver their other services in a
consistent and professional manner.

Chris June 20, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Howdy! Thank you Tineye! And please take all the time you need. The service you provide is outstanding! Are you listening, complainers? Chill out! It does not matter if this is routine maintenance or a major crash or simply a weekend on Maui for the Tineye crew. Don’t worry about it. Aren’t you tired of all the criticism? BRAVO TO TINEYE! Thank you!

justme June 21, 2010 at 12:58 am

@Joe Smith:
Dear Mr. Smith – looking at the matter from an external point of view, you should recognise that all you’re doing is making yourself look foolish. You may have realised this, but you are dealing with a large corporation, for whom “TinEye” is most likely a marketing initiative. As such, it has resources allocated to it accordingly. When it comes to your “simple” matter of changing servers – did you contemplate the sheer size that would be required for a fast-access image service such as this? This doesn’t involve the purchase of a 1.5 TB hardrive for $120, and as such it’s to be expected that maintenance involves a server downtime. As for Ms. Janette – spare yourself the effort of dealing with unfounded abuse which Mr. Smith so clearly demonstrated. You can’t beat a fool at his own game, because if you try you’ll have to stoop down to his level, and he’ll beat you in experience.

We love Tineye and use it constantly on our site. For those that use it for fake profiles, may I suggest http://www.scamdigger.com as it has thousands of pictures used by scammers in their profiles. It’s obviously nowhere near as powerful as Tineye and far from an alternative, but it’s a useful addition to it.

@Adam: Great. You paint me a bleak picture. Embarrassment abounds.
@Mike: Good point and coupled with @Adam’s insight curtailing my recess options considerably, I believe I’ll be taking your advice. It’s difficult for me to see the forest for the trees when I’m on my soapbox. Working on that this very moment.
